“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series - Dave Schiavone & George Kane

“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series at Symposium continues this April with the talented Dave Schiavone Duo featuring Dave on saxophone and George Kane on guitar. Reservations are highly recommended.

Woodwind player Dave Schiavone, in addition to performing with the Amherst Saxophone Quartet, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and his own group (the Dave Schiavone Quartet, aka DSQ), has toured both nationally and internationally with the bands of Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey, and Doc Severinson. He has also performed with artists Nancy Wilson, Natalie Cole, Harry Connick Jr., Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra Jr., Kenny Rogers, Maureen McGovern, David Clayton Thomas, Mel Lewis, Don Menza, Louis Bellson, Gap Mangione, and Aretha Franklin, to name a few. Dave is a graduate of the University of Buffalo Music School and also attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. In addition, he served for three years as saxophonist and flutist in the 324th and 327th U.S. Army Bands. Dave runs an extensive private teaching practice. From 1995-2015 Dave was a professor of Music at the University at Buffalo, Buffalo State, Canisius College and Villa Maria College. He was instuctor of Saxophone, Flute, and Clarinet, as well as directing Jazz Ensembles, Jazz Combos and Saxophone Quartets. Since 2008, Dave has also resided in Ratekau Germany, in Schleswig-Holstein, where he performs and teaches. He has performed in Lubeck as well as Hamburg.

George Kane has been a well-established jazz guitarist in the Western New York area for the past thirty years. He regularly performs with the area’s finest musicians in various venues and styles. A graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, George studied with William Leavitt, Guitar Department Chair and author of A Modern Method for Guitar. In addition to performing, George operates a private teaching practice.

Boozy Book Swap!

Get ready for a night of literary delights and bookish camaraderie at our first Boozy Book Swap! Join fellow book lovers for an evening of swapping stories and sharing reads, as you pass on well-loved books and get new-to-you books in return.

Any kind of book is welcome – fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, self-help, how-to, mystery, thriller, contemporary romance (aka the "smut"genre...iykyk)

The only requirement is that you bring books that you thoroughly enjoyed and you think others will too! Grab tickets HERE

How it works:

You can bring up to 10 gently used books that you LOVE and are ready to pass along to a new reader.

Before you arrive:

Write a sticky note with what you loved about each book and stick it on the cover.

Upon arrival:

Your ticket includes a welcome glass of bubbly, as well as delish cheese and charcuterie to snack on!

You will “shelve” your book based on its genre and browse the book selection while sipping on wine, beer and cocktails, and chatting with fellow book enthusiasts. At swapping time you will be able to select up to as many books as you brought. If there are books remaining at the end of the swapping rounds, they will be open to all.

The bar will be open to purchase additional drinks.

Chardonnay lovers UNITE! Travel the world with us as we sample Chardonnay from different growing regions across the world. Each wine is paired with a small-bite, and we'll chat about the producers, regions, how the wines are made and what makes them so special!

“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series - John and Lisa Hasselback

“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series at Symposium continues this May with the talented John Hasselback, Jr. on trombone and Lisa Hasselback on keyboard. Reservations are highly recommended.

John Hasselback, Jr. began his musical career at an early age, performing with his father as a young teenager. He received a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from the Hartt School of Music, where he studied both Classical and Jazz Music, and apprenticed with the legendary Jackie McLean. He has since received Education and Graduate degrees from SUNY Fredonia and Empire State College. John has been very active as a performer, working across the United States and Europe with many noted Jazz artists including Jaki Byard, Don Menza, Maynard Ferguson, Roswell Rudd, Gap Mangione and Chuck Mangione. He is a featured soloist on recordings with Gap Mangione, Kenny Wheeler, and Don Menza. Recently, John was a featured member of the Don Menza Quintet, performing in Munich Germany, and performed as a member of the Ron Carter “Great Big Band” at Birdland in New York City. He has served as an Artistic Director for the Buffalo Jazz Collective, dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and advancing the rich Jazz heritage of Western New York.  John has been named "Top Jazz Trombonist in Western New York" by the JazzBuffalo poll numerous times, since the poll’s inception in 2014. John is currently in his 22nd year at West Seneca Central Schools, where he is the director of the Jazz Ensemble at West Senior High School and serves as the coordinator of the district's annual Jazz festival. Additionally, he serves as the Erie County Music Educators Association Chairman for Jazz.

Texas native, Lisa Hasselback received her high school education at Interlochen Arts Academy where she studied piano, oboe and mallet percussion.  She attended The Hartt  School of music at the University of Hartford and received her Bachelors degree in African-American Jazz Studies under the leadership of alto saxophonist, Jackie McLean. She received her master’s degree in Education from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY.  She has taught elementary and middle school general music since 1988 and has been employed by Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union-Free School District since 1990.  Presently she teaches vocal music to kindergartners, 1st and 3rd graders at Hoover Elementary School. Lisa has played with the Buffalo Philharmonic Pops Orchestra for trumpeter Byron Stripling and vocalist Marva Hicks, The New York Voices, Liz Callaway singing the Carole King songbook; the American Idol winner, Melinda Doolittle; the concert opener for Gladys Knight, the BPO Prohibition Concert featuring vocalists Bronson Norris Murphy, Madison Claire Parks and Myra Maud and most recently she was a featured soloist for the Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole tribute concert entitled Unforgettable with vocalists Dee Daniels and Denzal Sinclaire.  Lisa has toured with The Four Lads, The Four Aces and The Chordettes.  She has played for Bob Newhart at Chautauqua Institute and with Houston Person at the Albright-Knox Summer Jazz Series. Through the years she has played in big bands and jazz festivals in the Buffalo area and continues to teach private lessons.

“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series - Olivia Amorian

“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series at Symposium continues this June as we welcome Olivia Amorian, singer/songwriter. Reservations are highly recommended.

Olivia is an international pop and R&B singer-songwriter performing across the U.S. and Canada. She started recording original songs and releasing them on all major streaming platforms in 2017. She recorded her debut single, “Again” in 2019.

Since then, Olivia has produced and impressive catalog of music, including several singles, an EP “Hyperactive” and her 2022 full studio album, “I Shall not Conform.” Her latest release, “Miami” captures the breathtaking views of the city, its pristine beaches, and the iconic Miami nightlife.

In 2022, Olivia won 2nd place as a radio finalist in Buffalo’s Power 96.5 BMMCA radio competition. She returned in 2023 as a judge, further solidifying her role as an artist and composer.

She has made multiple media appearances, including interviews and performances on Daytime Buffalo and most recently was featured on “The Bubba Show” on Star Pittsburgh 100.7.

Olivia graduated from the University at Buffalo with a degree in psychology and counseling. She’s currently pursing a career in children’s counseling, while continuing to inspire through her music.

Cookie and Wine Pairing Class! - SOLD OUT

This class is sold out, but stay tuned for future classes!

It's that time of year when we're supporting our scouts and indulging in our favorite cookies - and we found the perfect wines to pair!

We LOVE this time of year and we love a challenge - so we're bringing to you our first Girl Scout Cookie and Wine Pairing Class! And we're doing it in a way that challenges your perceptions of these delicious snacks AND the wines from around the world that we feel are a perfect fit. Trust us, you're gunna love it. Class includes 6 wine tastings and 6 varieties of cookies.

*** Spoiler Alert - wines WILL include a few dry wines, and several dessert and sweet wines - you’ve been warned :-)***

Doors open promptly at 6 and class starts at 6:15 p.m.

Refunds will only be honored 7 days prior to the event, and Eventbrite fees will not be refunded. If you need to cancel later than 7 days prior to the event, refunds will not be honored.

“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series - Elliott Scozzaro Duo

“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series at Symposium continues this March with the incredibly talented Elliott Scozzaro Duo featuring Elliott on saxophone and George Caldwell on keyboard. Reservations are highly recommended.

Elliot Scozzaro is a saxophonist, composer, arranger, and educator from Buffalo, NY. He holds a Bachelor of Music from Capital University in Columbus, OH and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas (UNT), where he played lead alto saxophone in the seven-time Grammy-nominated One O’ Clock Lab Band. In 2016, Elliot was named a semi-finalist in the North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Competition. After spending several months in the great city of Chicago, Elliot joined the renowned Glenn Miller Orchestra in January 2018.

For several months in early 2019, Elliot played woodwinds in the showband on the American Duchess, a riverboat based on the Mississippi River. Afterward he returned to Buffalo, where he maintains a busy schedule as both a leader and sideman throughout the Western New York region. Elliot is currently on faculty at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Fredonia and Buffalo State University and also serves as the Program Coordinator for the Buffalo Jazz Collective, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and advancing the rich jazz heritage of Western New York.

George Caldwell is a grammy-award winning jazz pianist. Highlights of his career as a jazz pianist include: a stint with tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan; piano chair of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and touring the globe with the renowned Count Basie Orchestra. He garnered a Grammy in 1996 for the cd Live at the Manchester Craftsman’s Guild. His Broadway, National and European Tours include Black and Blue, and Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk. He has shared the bandstand with Dizzy Gillespie, Cab Calloway, Shirley Bassey, Quincy Jones, Joe Williams, George Benson, Kenny Garrett, Gregory Hines, Savion Glover, Lou Rawls, Lionel Hampton, George Coleman, Roy Hargrove, and Bobby McFerrin. Caldwell has also performed at major jazz festivals and in the great concert halls of the world.

“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series - Mark Filsinger Duo

“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series is BACK for it’s second season at Symposium! For our first gig of the series we’re welcoming back the Mark Filsinger duo, featuring Mark on trumpet and George Caldwell on keyboard. Reservations are highly recommended.

Mark Filsinger is a versatile trumpet performer, composer, arranger, and clinician. Mark has performed and toured around the United States with various jazz, classical, and commercial ensembles including Bright Eyes, The Who, Weird Al Yankovic, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Johnny Mathis, the Beach Boys, and The Temptations.  

In 2022, The Mark Filsinger Chamber Big Band released its debut album, Groovin’ High on Buffalo Jazz Collective Records. The album features nine of Mark’s original arrangements and compositions. Mark also serves as Associate Professor of Music at SUNY Buffalo State.

George Caldwell is a grammy-award winning jazz pianist. Cookie Decorating at Symposium!

The best time of the year for decorating sugar cookies is here and Buffalo Cake Pops is on the road again - to Symposium Wine Bar! In this class, you’ll be focusing on the classics, decorating a half-dozen sugar cookies! You’ll go step by step learning the sugar cookie decorating way, including how to use royal icing to flood your cookies, using wet-on-wet techniques for super cool designs, and how to use stiff icing for fun details. You’ll also receive the royal icing recipe to practice your cookie decorating skills at home for the holiday season!

Your ticket includes a glass of bubbly from Symposium, a class led by Rosalie, the very talented owner of Buffalo Cake Pops and you’ll leave class with 6 delicious cookies decorated by YOU!

Age minimum on this class is 8 years and up. In this particular class, all persons in the room must have a ticket to participate, due to limited seating. This means that a child and adult pair would need 2 tickets to attend. Please email buffalocakepops@gmail.com with any questions before class.

Fall and Thanksgiving Wines Class

There's bound to be a variety of herbs, spices, textures and flavors at your harvest table -it's one of the things that makes Thanksgiving dinner so delightful! Choosing wine that compliments a wide range of dishes is the key to pleasing palettes and keeping things low-stress and high-enjoyment. At this class, we'll taste through some classic fall and Thanksgiving wines and in true Symposium style, no pretention or judgement - just fun and exploration.
