“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series - Dave Schiavone & George Kane

“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series at Symposium continues this March with the incredibly talented Dave Schiavone Duo featuring Dave on saxophone and George Kane on guitar.

Woodwind player Dave Schiavone, in addition to performing with the Amherst Saxophone Quartet, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and his own group (the Dave Schiavone Quartet, aka DSQ), has toured both nationally and internationally with the bands of Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey, and Doc Severinson. He has also performed with artists Nancy Wilson, Natalie Cole, Harry Connick Jr., Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra Jr., Kenny Rogers, Maureen McGovern, David Clayton Thomas, Mel Lewis, Don Menza, Louis Bellson, Gap Mangione, and Aretha Franklin, to name a few. Dave is a graduate of the University of Buffalo Music School and also attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. In addition, he served for three years as saxophonist and flutist in the 324th and 327th U.S. Army Bands. Dave runs an extensive private teaching practice. From 1995-2015 Dave was a professor of Music at the University at Buffalo, Buffalo State, Canisius College and Villa Maria College. He was instuctor of Saxophone, Flute, and Clarinet, as well as directing Jazz Ensembles, Jazz Combos and Saxophone Quartets. Since 2008, Dave has also resided in Ratekau Germany, in Schleswig-Holstein, where he performs and teaches. He has performed in Lubeck as well as Hamburg.

George Kane has been a well-established jazz guitarist in the Western New York area for the past thirty years. He regularly performs with the area’s finest musicians in various venues and styles. A graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, George studied with William Leavitt, Guitar Department Chair and author of A Modern Method for Guitar. In addition to performing, George operates a private teaching practice.

Wine Class: Weird and Wonderful Wines of Italy (SOLD OUT)

You know and love the Italian classics, now explore some lesser-known (and underrated) regions! We'll be taking you off the beaten path to explore the unique style and character of some unfamiliar grape varietals, from Italy's diverse wine regions.

Expect to expand your knowledge - and your palette - and maybe even find your new favorite wine!

Your ticket includes five wine tastings accompanied by cheese and small-bite pairings. Class will be led by Symposium Wine Bar owner, Katie McKenna-Heveron and co-hosted by wine enthusiest, Neil Walker-Neveras. Neil has a long-standing and deep appreciation for wine with an emphasis on Italian varietals, and is an advocate for lesser-knows Italian wines and producers. He lives part-time in Buffalo and part-time at his home in Perugia, Italy, located in the Umbria wine region. Class will run from 6 p.m., until approx. 7:30 p.m. and the bar will open for purchase of wine and beer following the class.

“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series - The Mark Filsinger Duo

“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series at Symposium is back and joining us again, is the incredible Mark Filsinger duo!

Mark Filsinger is a versatile trumpet performer, composer, arranger, and clinician. Mark has performed and toured around the United States with various jazz, classical, and commercial ensembles including Bright Eyes, The Who, Weird Al Yankovic, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Johnny Mathis, the Beach Boys, and The Temptations.  

In 2022, The Mark Filsinger Chamber Big Band released its debut album, Groovin’ High on Buffalo Jazz Collective Records. The album features nine of Mark’s original arrangements and compositions. Mark also serves as Associate Professor of Music at SUNY Buffalo State.

Jared Tinkham is a jazz guitarist and educator based in Western New York. Born in Rochester, NY, Jared earned an Associate’s Degree in Music Performance from Monroe Community College and his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Music Education at SUNY Buffalo State College.

Jared currently teaches multiple guitar ensembles, jazz ensemble, and music theory courses at the Buffalo Academy of Visual and Performing Arts. Jared has had the privilege of studying with and accompanying many incredible artists, including Bob Sneider, Evan Drummond, Mark Filsinger, Anton Machleder, Steve Greene, Craig Snyder, Bobby Millitello, Michael McNeill, John Bacon Jr., Kelly Bucheger, Tim Clarke, Greg Millar, Trigger Gaston, and many more. Jared has performed in several jazz festivals in WNY, including the Lewiston Jazz Festival, Queen City Jazz Festival, Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, and the Nietzsche’s Jazz Festival.

In 2015, Jared was voted “Best Jazz Guitarist” by Jazz Buffalo. He currently resides in Buffalo, NY, where he gigs frequently and maintains a private guitar studio.

Springtime Sugar Cookie Decorating Class

Buffalo Cake Pops is on the road again and are headed to Symposium! This fun springtime class will be the perfect night out before the hustle and bustle of your Easter week. In it, you will receive 6 sugar cookies, and you’ll go step by step to create this fun Easter cookie set. We’ll go over how to use royal icing to flood your cookies, use wet on wet techniques for super cool designs, and how to use stiff icing for fun details. And best of all, you get to take home your beautiful sugar creations!

The cookie decorating will run from 6-8 p.m. Included in the price of the class is a complimentary glass of bubbly from the venue while we’re decorating/during class. Symposium’s bar will be open an hour before, and after class for purchase of wine, beer or cocktails as well!

Age minimum on this class is 8 years and up. In this particular class, all persons in the room must have a ticket to participate, due to limited seating. This means that a child and adult pair would need 2 tickets to attend. Please email us at buffalocakepops@gmail.com with any questions before class.

“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series - The Elliott Scozzaro Duo

“First Sundays” Jazz Brunch Series at Symposium continues this March with the incredibly talented Elliott Scozzaro Duo featuring Elliott on saxophone and George Caldwell on piano.

Elliot Scozzaro is a saxophonist, composer, arranger, and educator from Buffalo, NY. He holds a Bachelor of Music from Capital University in Columbus, OH and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas (UNT), where he played lead alto saxophone in the seven-time Grammy-nominated One O’ Clock Lab Band. In 2016, Elliot was named a semi-finalist in the North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Competition. After spending several months in the great city of Chicago, Elliot joined the renowned Glenn Miller Orchestra in January 2018.

For several months in early 2019, Elliot played woodwinds in the showband on the American Duchess, a riverboat based on the Mississippi River. Afterward he returned to Buffalo, where he maintains a busy schedule as both a leader and sideman throughout the Western New York region. Elliot is currently on faculty at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Fredonia and Buffalo State University and also serves as the Program Coordinator for the Buffalo Jazz Collective, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and advancing the rich jazz heritage of Western New York.

George Caldwell is a grammy-award winning jazz pianist. Highlights of his career as a jazz pianist include: a stint with tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan; piano chair of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and touring the globe with the renowned Count Basie Orchestra. He garnered a Grammy in 1996 for the cd Live at the Manchester Craftsman’s Guild. His Broadway, National and European Tours include Black and Blue, and Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk. He has shared the bandstand with Dizzy Gillespie, Cab Calloway, Shirley Bassey, Quincy Jones, Joe Williams, George Benson, Kenny Garrett, Gregory Hines, Savion Glover, Lou Rawls, Lionel Hampton, George Coleman, Roy Hargrove, and Bobby McFerrin. Caldwell has also performed at major jazz festivals and in the great concert halls of the world.
